TOURNAMENT
DIRECTOR
The Tournament Director's (TD) decision is final, on any
matter. The TD will appoint "helpers" to carry out the
duties of recording wins/losses, keeping order in the
playing area, settling disputes among players. "Helpers" (H)
will assist the TD in any area the TD requests - the H's
role is to make the TD's job easier.
PROCEDURE AT THE
TOURNAMENT
For students in grades 1 to 8, the students will compete
at their own grade level (if we find that some grades have very few kids, we reserve the right to combine 2 grades). For grades 1, 2,
3 and 4 the games will be approximately 30 minutes in
length. More time may be added in the later rounds when the
medal contenders will be playing stronger games and possibly
slower games. For grades 5 and higher, a chess clock will be
used on the top boards, starting with round 1. The clocks
will be set for 15-20 minutes. A falling flag will determine
a winner if the game has not come to a natural end. In the
event a game has to be judged, care and consideration should
be given to position as well as piece count. The opposite
may occur with a position of King and Rook against King,
where player "A" with the Rook just keeps chasing, with
checks, player "B"'s King. Player "A" has not demonstrated
an ability to win with clear material, and a draw can be
judged appropriate.
In the event two players are in dispute over a position,
a decision will be made in favour of the player who is
recording the game. If both players are recording, then the
game will be reconstructed to the point both records agree.
If neither player is recording, then the position will be
backtracked to a point where both players agree or where the
tournament director decides.
"HIGH-SCHOOL"
section
The purpose of the high-school tournament is to determine
who are the best players in High School.
Au Diapason wishes to award "scholarships" (cash prizes)
to students who finish highest in the following three
categories :
Section A (grades 11
and 12), Section B (grades 9
and 10)
For pairing purposes Au Diapason will decide - depending
on the number of registrants - for grades 9 through 12.
Au Diapason, at its own discretion, will determine the
prize structure for the two sections.
