In 1991 the chess competitions involved 130 students from both Public and Catholic School Boards.
In 1992 there were 255 students participating and this year 1993, we find 310 students competing in a Swiss Style chess tournament.
Interest in chess in the Elementary School scene has grown in the past years and now involves more than 30 schools. In the community of adults we find the Tri-County Chess Club that meets every Wednesday evening from 7 to 9:30 at C.C.V.S. and the "Senior Citizens' Chess Club that meets on Wednesday mornings 10 to 12 at the Knights of Columbans Hall on Amelia Street.

Next year, Raymond Lacroix, of the S.D. & G. Public School Board expects another growth in participation. Due to the large numbers of candidates this year there was a change in tournament styles. The Swiss System of competition (winner takes winner - looser takes looser) was used compared to the Round Robin Style (tables of 6 players playing 5 rounds against each other).
Mr. Lacroix wishes to thank both school boards for their continued support and encouragement and the Senior Citizen's Chess Club and the Tri-County Chess Club for the help in running the tournament this year. Also the Nativity Church Hall and Claude Poirier are to be thanked for the use of the facilities donated to the tournament.
Parents and teachers are encouraged to continue to support their school chess clubs. The tournament will again be held next year the Thursday and Friday after the Winter Break. We are all looking forward to this yearly activity that invites all schools, elementary and secondary of the S.D. & G. area.
Both the S.D.& G. Public and S.D.& G. Catholic School Boards have sponsored this tournament.
